Physiotherapy treatment uses a physical approach to restore, maintain and promote physical and psychological wellbeing. This can help people of all ages to relieve pain and restore normal movement and to allow the body to function as efficiently as possible. Almost all causes of pain, weakness, stiffness and loss of movement can be treated using physiotherapy. Physiotherapy treatment can be used if you are suffering from an acute injury or chronic pain, if you have had surgery like a knee or hip replacement. Physiotherapy sessions are unique to each client so each session will be tailored to your needs and goals to help get you back doing what you would like to be doing and achieve your goals.
Physiotherapy treatment begins with an initial assessment where the physio will ask questions to gain an understanding of the nature of your discomfort. Physiotherapy takes a holistic approach to health meaning that we look at you as a whole person and look at the surrounding areas of your body but also look at your lifestyle and hobbies to allow you to recover fully and be the best you can be.
The physiotherapist will then perform a physical examination looking at function and movement testing, they will palpate problem areas or joints to help diagnose the structures that are involved. Further to this, the physiotherapist will provide an explanation of their diagnosis, proposed treatment and a plan for the management of this condition to get you back doing what you love.
Physiotherapy treatment can involve many different options. These are used to help to reduce pain, improve function and range of motion and to get you back to full fitness. These treatment methods are:
- Soft tissue therapy
- Taping for support/pain relief
- Acupuncture/dry needling
- Manual therapy/manipulation
- Exercise prescription
- Gym & fitness programmes
At the end of your session an individualised treatment plan will be set out. The whole process is discussed together with you and your physiotherapy and treatment will be monitored and adjusted if needed to ensure that the agreed and realistic outcomes can be achieved. Most clients are given an exercise programme to complete between appointments to optimise the recovery process. The period in-between treatment sessions is as important as the treatment within sessions.
