Viscosupplementation with Hyaluronic Acid
Viscosupplementation with Hyaluronic Acid (HLA) is an advanced treatment designed to relieve joint pain and improve mobility in individuals suffering from osteoarthritis or other degenerative joint conditions. This minimally invasive procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in joint fluid—directly into the affected joint to restore lubrication, reduce friction, and cushion the joint during movement using ultrasound scanning.
Ideal for those seeking non-surgical solutions for joint discomfort, HLA injections offer a safe and effective way to alleviate pain, enhance joint function, and support an active lifestyle. At Precision MSK Health, our experienced clinicians deliver this treatment with precision, using ultrasound guidance to ensure accuracy and optimal outcomes.
HLA is recommended for use in symptomatic osteoarthritis by the International Osteoarthritis Research Society (OARSI), European League Against Rheumatism, American College of Rheumatology (American Arthritis Foundation) and European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO).

Mechanisms of Action
Viscosupplementation involves the injection of a synthetic form of hyaluronan, a viscous and elastic substance found in normal synovial joint fluid. Injected directly into the joint, it works directly to improve joint function and reduce symptoms in the following ways:
Hyaluronic acid (HLA) can be used in the knee, hip, ankle and foot, as well as the shoulder, elbow, wrist and base of thumb.
- Lubrication and shock absorption
- Anti-inflammatory actions
- Analgesic properties
- Stimulates production of normal, non-inflamed joint fluid
- Protects residual cartilage within the joint
The Treatment
- The injection is performed under ultrasound guidance with sterile conditions
- The appointment is 15-20 minutes and patients are able to drive afterwards
- Relative rest for 48 hours is recommended after the injection. Where possible, avoid activities that exacerbate or worsen the joint symptoms during that time
Side Effects and Risks
- Transient joint swelling or stiffness
- Bruising or mild-moderate temporary pain at the injection site
- Infection is rare. If fever develops with joint pain, swelling, redness and warmth in the week following an injection, you should immediately contact your doctor and our practice
